The History of
Central Iowa Center for Independent Living
Independent living began as a grassroots movement in the late 1960's and
early 1970's in Berkeley, California. The movement has grown from a local effort, to
having a national impact on human and civil rights.
Today, there are independent living centers in all 50 states. Each
organization is dedicated to promoting the rights of all persons with disabilities to
direct their own lives.
Independent living centers are unique because they are controlled and
operated by persons with disabilities, for persons with disabilities.
With assistance from an independent living center, people of all ages with
disabilities can work to achieve a lifestyle and degree of independence and of individual
choice, and can become active participants in all aspects of society. |
